About This Item

Boston, MA, 1870. General wear. Letter folds. Minor tear along right edge. Age toning.. A broadside advertising a change of ownership for a grocery store in Boston, MA. The store itself was located near the Boston neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Fairmount. The grocery was originally leased by a W. T. Allen, and, according to the broadside, is now leased by W. A. Bonney who "has put in a good assortment of FIRST-RATE FAMILY GROCERIES, and he hopes by keeping good goods and selling at low prices, to obtain a good share of your trade." According to the broadside the store sold a wide variety of items such as sugar, flour, spices, tea, coffee, tapioca, arrow-root, oranges, lemons, apples, currants, and kerosene oil. Little is known about the business itself, except for the fact that it again changed hands in 1874, though Bonney's family would still continue live above the store for a short while. A newspaper article on November 21, 1874 in the Boston Post states that a fire broke out and the building, both grocery and apartment, were destroyed. In the same article it notes that the grocery recently changed hands from W. A. Bonney to H. O. Camp, and the Bonney family was able to save most of their furniture. Single sheet, single sided. Measures 12" x 9
