About This Item
[New Mexico][Native Americana] Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Photography Collection--1968
Collection consists of 180 photographs in glassine sleeves, each with negative. Photographs measures 3 x 2.5 inches and are in fine condition. Several sleeves have small tears.
Interesting and comprehensive collection of photos from the 1968 Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. First launched in 1922, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial has been taking place in Gallup, New Mexico, for over 100 years. The Ceremonial is not only one New Mexico's oldest events, but also one of longest running celebrations of Native American culture and art.
Early Ceremonials featured Native Americans primarily from the nearby Navajo Nation and Pueblo of Zuni, but soon attracted tribal members from throughout the west. Events include parades, sporting events and cultural and art exhibitions.
We are unsure of who the photographer was for this set but surmise it was Nello Guadagnoli. Nello and his wife Shan purchased the Mullarky Camera Shop and Studio from long-time Gallup photographer Tom Mullarky around 1965. The Guadagnoli's continued running the camera shop but also added the Kiva Gallery, selling Native American art. Nello Guadagnoli was an accomplished photographer who documented several Inter-Tribal Ceremonials. Most of his work was 35mm slides, however. This collection was acquired from the Guadagnoli family.
This collection is shot by a professional. The images are sharp, the composition is clean, and the photographer utilized lighting extremely well.
Even though Ceremonial photographs from this period are not rare, these 180 images with negatives are a gold-mine of great images from 56 years ago.
