Several former owner's names on preliminary blank leaf, title page, and final blank leaf. Upper corner of front free endpaper removed and replace with plain paper, presumably removing another former owner's name. Marginal notations on a few pages in an old hand. In Very Good+ Condition: light foxing; occasional marginalia; solid.

Title page and copyright page are missing, text starts with foldout map, just preceding preface (which is page 5). Text is clean with some foxing. Several light stains to text edge. Fraying at the spine ends and front corners. Folded down page corners. Inscription, "George C. Westphal from Bishop Levering's Library. Spine is slightly age darkened. Rear internal hinge re-glued. Uncommon copy. Religion; Portrait frontispiece.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 414 pages .

Research shows that the first edition is 1871. This date appears at the bottom of the title page and on the copyright. Rare first edition with a tissue frontispiece of the author opposite the title page beginning with Chapter 1, "Read the Best Books". The boards have some stains and scratches with a partial glass ring. They are very worn at the corners and edges with some tears to the cloth at the edges of the spine. The hinges appear intact. The back is shown first. Signature of gift giver on ffep. Book is complete. Some pencil lines in the margins and several lines underlined in two places. Paper is thin so I didn't try to erase them. Some speckling to foredge. I suspected the top may have been dyed at some time. Book appears to be self published since the printer is listed on the title page. Several page corners creased ad the bottom and some stains and smudges. Spine is cocked. The paper apparently was stuck opposite the copyright page and was pulled apart.

London 1906. A collection of four essays written by the English philosopher John Ruskin (1819-1900) which were first published in the Cornhill Magazine. The essays are The Roots of Honour, The Veins of Wealth, Qui Judicatis Terran and Ad Valorem.
Contemporary red calf, decorative spine with raised bands, arms of Marlborough College blocked in gilt to front board, marbled endpapers and edges. Contents clean and free of markings.
Neat ink inscription on first blank reading "Cogswell A E Harrison Mathematics Prize. In divisions. Marlborough. July 1910. Signed: Frank Fletcher."
Frank Fletcher was headmaster of Marlborough College and Cogswell Harrison is thought to be the only son of Edgar Harrison the principal of Cogswell & Harrison, est. 1770 and London's oldest gunmakers.
Cogswell died tragically in an explosion in the company's powder mills and shooting grounds in Colnbrook in 1915.
