About This Item

This is a large-format copy of Charles Dickens' classic Nicholas Nickleby, first published in 1839. In 1980, The Royal Shakespeare Company staged a production of this book, the production was staged in London, Yorkshire and Portsmouth, and it was filmed for the BBC.

In 1982, Toronto's Stoddart Publishing gathered the cast lists and still photos from the production and produced this book. So it's the book, the original illustrations by 'Phiz', and numerous color photographs of the actors on stage.

7 1/4" x 10" and 420 pages. It's quite heavy.

There is an attractive bookplate on the inside front cover.

There is quite a bit of scuffing to the dust jacket. And something was dropped on it, leaving five small nicks at the top left corner. Three of those went through the jacket and onto the cover of the book.

Other than that, this book is perfect. In mint condition.

Synopsis

Nicholas Nickleby finds himself penniless after his father's death and turns to his wealthy uncle to help him find work in effort to protect his mother and sister. But Ralph Nickleby proves both hard-hearted and unscrupulous, and Nicholas finds himself forced to navigate  his own way in the world. This adventure gave Dickens the opportunity to portray an extraordinary gallery of rogues and eccentrics: Wackford Squeers, the tyrannical headmaster of Dotheboys Hall, a school for unwanted boys; the slow-witted orphan Smike, rescued by Nicholas; and the gloriously theatrical Mr and Mrs Crummles and their daughter, the 'infant phenomenon'. Like many of Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby is characterised by his outrage at cruelty and social injustice, but is also a lively work, revealing his comic genius at its highest.
