About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Very Good+. Mary Potter (dust jacket illustration). 8vo. Pp. 380 followed by four pages of publisher ads. Bound in black cloth with gilt lettering on spine. One top corner just a tad bumped. In the color illustrated dust jacket that has two old tape repairs to interior head and tail of spine. A notably bright first edition of Lehmann's second novel, after her first, Dusty Answer, was a succes de scandale for its casual treatment of homosexuality and bisexuality. Her candid depictions of sexuality were reflection of her interaction with the Bloomsbury Group, and perhaps her ill-fated affair with Cecil Day Lewis. This novel is dedicated to Wogan Philipps, her second husband and the future Lord Milford, of the shipping family.

The dust jacket, well illustrated by Mary Potter, depicts an affluent couple walking their terrier, is now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
