London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1914. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $2,350. NOW $975. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (some fading to the boards, two white spots to the rear board's upper portion, light wear to the spine ends and board corners, some browning to the endpapers) with an unusually bright spine, in a Very Good example of the seldom seen (if not rare) dust jacket (some toning, small chips to the spine ends, short tear to the upper portion of the front panel, tiny tear to the front panel's lower edge and to the rear panel's upper edge); a collection of studies of eminent writers of fiction as well as some minor ones, along with some studies of dramatists. Those written of include Robert Louis Stevenson, Emile Zola, Gaustave Flaubert, Honore de Balzac, George Sand, and others. Only 1,100 copies of the first UK edition were printed and copies in collectable condition are scarce. Copies in the dust jacket certainly scarce and, in our opinion, quite possibly rare. A Very Good copy in the SCARCE TO RARE DUST JACKET.

Description:
Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

1895 ENORMOUS 1ed Classical MUSIC Handel Haydn MOZART Beethoven Seidl ART 10v
Anton Seidl was a 17th-century Hungarian orchestra conductor who was known for his interpretation of Wagnerian operas. However, aside from his conducting, he published an enormous work on the history and analysis of music. This work offered the essays and articles of notable music historians each of which described topics such as Italian opera, the quality of the male vocal range, great violin performers, Romanic school of composition, American composers, and much, much more!
In addition to superb articles, this mammoth set contains numerous full-page and in-text engravings of famous art and paintings depicting musicians and dancers. Some volumes contain musical examples from the works of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, and Haydn.

1820 Voyages of HMS ALCESTE Asia Exploration China Korea Japan Shipwreck PIRATES

John McLeod's book "Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Alceste, to China, Corea, and the Island of Lewchew, with an Account of Her Shipwreck" vividly recounts the perilous journey of the HMS Alceste, led by Captain Sir Murray Maxwell and tasked with escorting the British Ambassador to China in 1816. Authored by the ship's Scottish naval surgeon, John McLeod, the book recounts their voyage to several Asian destinations in China, Korea, and Japan and their encounters with varying cultures, as well as inaccuracies discovered in existing navigation charts of the period. The central drama of the book unfolds when the Alceste hits a hidden reef and is wrecked in the Gaspar Strait. Marooned on a nearby island, Maxwell and his crew endure the scarcity of food and persistent attacks from Malay pirates. Despite these challenges, there were no reported casualties, a testament to Maxwell's leadership. Their rescue and eventual return to… Read More
