Paris, chez Regnault, 1789. 3 vols. 8vo. pp. [iv], iv,368, [ii]; [iv], 382; [iv], 402, [ii] + 3 engraved folding maps (Spain, Madrid and Cadiz, engraved by Pierre François Tardieu) and 9 folding plates. Occasional wormholes in lower margin, one or two small spots and stains, contemporary calf, some wear to joints, headcaps and extremities. Authors name, Bourgoing, given in a contemporary hand on front pastedown. Jean-François, baron de Bourgoing (1748-1811) was a French diplomat, writer and translator, who served at the Court of Spain as Frances military attaché and principal assistant to the French ambassador between 1777 and 1783. He was active in negotiations to persuade Spain to join the Franco-American alliance during the American War of Independence (Spain went to war with England and besieged Gibraltar, but did not fully support the American colonists).
