London, Henry G. Bohn, 1854-1856. . 7 vols; small 8vo (18.5 x 12 cm); armorial bookplate to front pastedown of each vol., engraved frontispiece of Defoe to vol. 1, vol. VII (Robinson Crusoe) with numerous illustrations including frontispiece, vignette title, and engraved full-page plates; sprinkled half calf for Henry Sotheran, marbled boards ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering-pieces, top-edge gilt, minor wear to extremities, occasional spotting, overall an attractive near fine set.
A handsome uniformly bound set of Daniel Defoe's (d.1731) much beloved essays and novels, comprising 19 works including Robinson Crusoe, The History of the Plague in London, and three of Defoe's political pamphlets. The former with illustrations after the prolific engravers William Harvey (1796-1866) and Thomas Stothard (1755-1834).
