Published in 1900 by Edwin W. Dayton (NY); states '500 Copies Only Printed' on the copyright page. Matching date on the publication and copyright page indicate a first edition. Includes 27 illustrations. Cracked at the inner front hinge and other cracks forming at the signatures. Maroon hardcover shows significant wear, to include worn-through corners, worn-through spine tail, nicks along the edges, scuffs, smudges and spots on the front and rear. Faded spine. Textblock has a gilt top-edge, an uncut fore-edge, and smudges on the bottom-edge because it is sagging. Front free endpaper is torn out and missing while the rear free endpaper has a tear. Hard creases at the front and rear inner hinges. Inscription on the half-title page reads, there appears to be no other writing. Overall, it is in Good Minus (G-) condition.

Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius (1636-1708) was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker (1675), Utrecht (1680), and Leiden (1698). [EB11]. His Aegyptiaca (first printed in 1683) compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. (xxi), 955pp. 2 full-page maps as a double frontisp., many plates, of which plans of temples, text-figs. and ills, diagrammes, full-page coloured maps and plans, index, list of contents, and important notice on Bakshish, list of Egyptological words.This work represents far more information to the tourist than the usual tourist-guide. Originally drawn up in 1886 in accordance to the suggestions of his [Wallis Budge's] friend Mr. J.M. Cook with vast information on ancient monumental Egypt.
