A nice example of the wartime production.

Signed by John Ball directly on the title page, including a unique, pithy inscription from Ball, incorporating the most famous quote from the 1967 film that won five Academy Awards: "'They call me Mr. Tibbs.' / They call me / John Ball."

Book and dust jacket in fine condition, with minimal signs of wear. A beautiful copy of an historically significant work. Scarce thus.

The first appearance of African-American police detective Virgil Tibbs, receiving the Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America and made into an Oscar winning film of the same name, starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, and Warren Oates.

Printed on handmade Riccardi paper, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. 48 mounted color plates by W. Russell Flint with captioned tissue guards. Laid in are two bookmarks advertising the press and one folded sheet listing more titles. The green ribbon ties are all present, but two are truncated on volumes 1 and 3. Later editions of this popular work reduced the number of volumes and illustrations, first to 2 volumes with only 36 plates then down to one volume with 24 of the luminous plates.

Bound in contemporary half-leather binding over marbled paper covered boards, with all edges marbled and marbled endsheets; binder's stamp of Mudie to verso of front free endpaper. Near Fine with light rubbing to bindings, spines slightly sunned, foxing to pages and former owner name to front blank of each volume. A Victorian tripple-Decker in lovely contemporary binding. Although this novel initially received mixed reviews upon publication, it is now considered a major work of 19th-century literature.
