Frankfurt: Nicolai Bassaei, 1598. First Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. Contemporary alum-tawed pigskin with rolled decoration in panels. Some staining and wear to binding, corners bumped and worn, lacking clasps, but still an attractive example. Title and author penned to spine. Some general browning, scattered light dampstains, old notes to endpapers and in a few spots in the margins, minor worming, short tears in a few spots, mostly in the margin. Some hand coloring here and there, mostly to the leaves. (117), 1027, (1, blank), (22, Index); 236, (6, index) pp.

The first editin of Mattioli's collected works illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts of plants, animals, and other illustrations. Mattioli (1501-1577) was an accomplished physician (personal physician of Ferdinand II and Maximillian II) and an important naturalist.
