One volume of the 2-volume set. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight. Volume I only. First American Edition from the Second London Edition with Additions. Full Leather with gilt stamped and ruled on spine, xviii, 448 pages, seventy-one plates (one side of page only, 2 fold-out illustrations (Elevation of a Steam Engine Connected with a Sugar Mill, As Recently Constructed by Taylor & Martineau of London; and Rope Spinning). Corners and spine ends bumped with wear, boards worn and rubbed, lacks front free end paper, larger fold-out illustration was badly folded so it extends beyond edge of text block, damp stain at gutter through about page 51, pages toned, some scattered light foxing, pages 445-448 foxed, first fold-out map foxed, creased, one edge chipped with tear in blank margin; some foxing on plates, amount varies from plate to plate, second fold-out plate chipped along fore edge. Page xv, titled Description of the Frontispiece, indicates that the Steam Engine Connected with a Sugar Mill by Taylor & Martineau was a frontispiece; however, this plate is bound in just before the plates.
