About This Item

San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1923. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 4to. Pp. xv, 119, [6]. Frontis. mounted subject portrait painting by Olga M. Ackerman photographed by Dorothea Lange, with tissue guard. Title page illustration by H. Von Schmidt. Black half cloth binding over brown watermarked paper covered boards, titles and decorations stamped in gilt on dark red labels on the cover and spine. Letterpress printed in black, red and blue on art paper by the Grabhorn Press December 1923. Edition limited to 400, this copy numbered 266. Born in New York State to German-Jewish immigrants, Weil studied violin in Leipzig and Paris, served with the North in the Civil War, then settled in San Francisco where he taught violin and composition. Published two years after his death, this handsomely designed and printed collection includes his writing on music for the San Francisco Argonaut and lists his compositions.

A notably well preserved copy of the 19th book published by the Book Club of California. Listed as item 31 in David Magee's Catalogue of Some Five Hundred Examples of the Printing of Edwin and Robert Grabhorn ("G.B. 58"). Please note: The circular figures seen on the front and rear boards are not stains, but part of the paper design, meant to represent enlarged watermarks.
