About This Item
New York: Cosmopolitan, 1931. First American edition. Hardcover. fine/very good. First American edition. light gray cloth stamped in red and light blue. 241 pp. A tightg, fine example. In the orignal dust jacket, some short tears and shallow chipping to the edges and a larger chip to the foot of the spine and a somewhat smaller one at the head. The English language translation of "La Seconde", generally considered one of Colette's two masterpieces, a novel of a successful playwright, Jean Farou, who had many women in his life but whose bonds with his wife Fanny could not be destroyed. Fanny must face the fact that Farou's careless paganism had invaded their own domain and claimed Jane, the devoted companion/secretary of the household. The New York Times review of 1931 says, "Colette is unusually subtle..both very feminine and very Gallic..." and calls the work "... a subtle and penetrating study of a woman forced to watch her husband's endless and rather vulgar infidelities..."
