About This Item

Humphrey Milford: Oxford University Press, 1941. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Fair-. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. C. H. G. Moorhouse. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, decorative heavy weave cloth boards with paper labels on front and spine. Labels show wear and label on spine is barely readable. Cloth is also spotted and soiled. Interior binding is very bad in spots with a complete binding break at page 48/49 to where the book is only being held together by the exterior cloth. There are also several other small hinge cracks though hinges at boards are still okay. NOTE: This is also an ex-library edition and is stamped in three places (front pastedown, front end page, title page) which reads: "St. John's Preparatory Seminary for the Franciscan Friars of Atonement". The rear end page and pastedown shows where a date card and pocket were glued in. If that was not enough the front end page is also embossed in the upper right corner from the original merchant that appears to read: "Jules A, Menesse & Co., Santa Cruz, Bombay Suburbs". What makes this book unique and still collectible is the nearly full page inscription on the front end page: "To Very Rev. Father Raphael Francis S. A. From His grateful and devoted + Francis Tiburtius Roche, Bishop of Tuticorin, June 12, 1942 - (??)ast of (???) Sacred Heart". Bishop Roche is the first Bishop of the Tuticorin Diocese and also the also the first Indian Bishop of the Latin Rite. Despite the severe hinge issues the book is complete and attached. Stated second edition of November 1941 on the copyright page. Copyright page also shows library numbers written in pencil and 4242 written in pen.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
