About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1941. Hardcover. 413p., first edition oatmeal cloth boards titled red, very good condition in an unclipped but edgeworn dust jacket with large chips at the head and tail of the spine. *Rideout author. Hanna 298. Prestridge 121. "The chronicle of an immigrant Slovak family in the steel mills of Homestead, Pennsylvania from 1881 to the organization of the C.I.O. in 1935. There are detailed and authentic descriptions of the work in the mills and Bell has a sensitive appreciation of the workers' pride in their creativity but like many strike novels of this period this one describes the factory and organizing tactics of the workers in endless boring detail." *Blake p. 271.
