Hanna 298. Prestridge 121. "The chronicle of an immigrant Slovak family in the steel mills of Homestead, Pennsylvania from 1881 to the organization of the C.I.O. in 1935. There are detailed and authentic descriptions of the work in the mills and Bell has a sensitive appreciation of the workers' pride in their creativity but like many strike novels of this period this one describes the factory and organizing tactics of the workers in endless boring detail." *Blake p. 271.
Synopsis
Out of This Furnace is an historical novel and the best-known work of the American writer Thomas Bell (1903–1961). The novel is set in Braddock, Pennsylvania, a steel town just south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania along the Monongahela River. It was first published in 1941 by Little, Brown and Company.
