About This Item
New York: Ramparts Publishers, 1970. First Edition. Octavo. Cloth boards; dustjacket; 257, (6)pp. Tight, Near Fine copy in lightly rubbed dustwrapper. Scathing memoir of the author's seven-year professional football career, in which he depicts the NFL as "an astroturf jungle" riddled with "fraud, payoffs, racism, drug abuse and incredible violence." In 1970, Meggyesy turned on and dropped out, abandoning his pro career to become a union organizer and antiwar activist, though he would return to a long career in the NFL Players Association, from which he retired in 2007.
