Prev. owner inscription on endpaper. Interior is fine-clean, free from any markings. Jacket is clean on front, some staining on rear side, colorful with caricature illustrations by David Levine. Glassine jacket cover wrinkled. Chipped at spine ends. Price clipped. Caricatures of various American writers of the entire range of American literature, from Anne Bradstreet (d. 1612) to Sylvia Plath (d. 1963). The stories form an irreverent history of American literature. The anecdotes are not all antics nor are they all disgraceful or even humorous. Many are poignant, others merely curious. Taken all together they form a history of literature which is eccentric, light and revealing. 360 pages with Index of names and index of topics. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. Oxford University Press, NY 1981.
