French. 1011 pages, 719 ill. 27.5 x 33.5 cm. 3,9 kg. Cloth with dust jacket. a These volumes by Charles Sterling offer an overview of the pictorial production in Paris over two centuries (1300-1500). The capital of France was then both: a centre of intense spiritual and artistic life and a city shaken by riots, ravaged by epidemics, famines and war. However, it did not cease to shine as a focus of painting. A home that was important not only for France but for the whole of Europe...The second volume is devoted to the art of painting in Paris in the 15th century. Several tapestries and stained glass windows are added to the study of this active period, extending from the reign of Charles VII to that of Louis XII...Includes:ISBN vol. 1: 9782850470028ISBN vol. 2: 9782850471629...Charles Sterling ( 1901-1991)Esteemed Louvre curator Charles Sterling was born in Warsaw in 1901, and moved to France in 1925. Although trained as a lawyer, he began studying art history with Medievalist art historian Henri Focillon in Paris. Focillon became Sterling’s mentor, and his photograph was ever present in Sterling’s study. In 1929, he was offered a position at the Louvre in the paintings department. As curator, he organized exhibitions, oversaw the painting collection, and authored numerous catalogues, including French Realist Painters of the 17th Century (1934), Rubens and His Times (1936), and French Art Masterpieces (1937). Sterling was not independently wealthy, as were many curators at the time, rather he lived off money earned from his beautifully written catalogues. He combined the roles of connoisseur and historian, not only of art but also of social, political, and economic issues, and became a brilliant writer, all the more notable since he was twenty years old by the time he learned French.
