First Edition Thus after the 1853 first edition. Illustrated from drawings by Charles Nahl. Frontispiece, twenty headpieces and four (4) full-page drawings in color. Foreword by G. Ezra Dane. Cloth-backed boards. Paper label with colored drawing and title by Charles Nahl on front cover. Paper spine title label. 8" x 11 1/4". Bookplate of businessman and writer D. L. James, featuring the James house "Seaward" (now owned by Brad Pitt) designed and built by Greene & Greene on the Carmel Highlands in 1918 on the front pastedown. One of the Second Series of Americana by The Grabhorn Press. One of the Fifty Books of the Year. From the title page, "A series of original illustrated letters, written by one of California's pioneer miners, and dedicated to that class of her citizens by the author." Delano became a banker in Grass Valley, held in such high esteem that flags were flown at half-staff when he died.
