Glasgow: Printed and Sold by Robert Foulis, 1748., 1748.. Good. - Quarto, 9 inches high by 7 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in full brown calf rebacked with a modern leather spine decorated with gilt devices and titled in gilt between raised bands on a red leather label. The original calf is rubbed. viii & 541 pages printed on heavy stock. An attractive signed early book label, dated "1765" in ink above it, is mounted on the front pastedown. The signature of Sarah Willis Kelso (1776-1842), the mother of William C. Kelso (1812-1892), is penned along the top of the front endpaper and her later married name "Sarah Willis Carson" is penned at the top of the following leaf. The stamp of William C. Kelso is affixed under both of his mother's signatures. A later signature, that of Caroline E. Spooner, is penned below Kelso's stamp on the front endpaper. There is some foxing and staining throughout. There is a tear along the top inner edge of page 145. Good. <p>First edition of the first volume of Chevalier Ramsay's magnus opus. A second volume was published the following year.<p>Ramsay died in 1743 before completing this ambitious work. This first volume was completed with the assistance of Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), known as one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment. Hutcheson died before work on the second volume was completed.<p>Ramsay believed in universal salvation. In this work he writes: "God's primitive, positive, ultimate and absolute designs cannot be eternally frustrated [...]: therefore before the general re-establishment of lapsed beings, the earth and all its inhabitants are to be restored to their primitive, paradisiacal beauty, perfection and happiness". - Vol. 1, page 438.
