Thomas Cowperthwait And Co. For James A. Bill, Philadelphia.. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1850. 1850 Edition. Hardcover. First published in 1848 this 1850 edition has had the binding professionally restored to retain as much of the original cover as possible. The interior is complete and all illustrations are present. Over 500 engravings from designs of W. Croome and other artists including six colored plates using the cromolithography process. Cromolithography was developed in the 1840s and this book, published in 1850, is an early example of the use of this process for printing color illustrations. All 6 color plates are present with the original tissue guards on each. Each plate is in fine condition. Many of the plates in this book have been reproduced and sold individually. Especially popular to reproduce is the black and white plate of the "Texas Ranger" on page 356. 640 pages. A very important book of the history of Mexico, Texas, and the Southwest . Due to the age of the book foxing is present on all pages, but the clarity of the text or illustrations is not affected. A 1 1/2 in closed tear is at the top of page 11. The book has an early owner's name written in that has not been identified. This book has been thoroughly inspected for missing pages and illustrations and any defects. The book has been rated as in Near Fine condition. A superb copy that you will likely not find anywhere in this condition. ; 6 in. x 9 1/4 in. .

First edition.Richard Owen Cambridge was a British poet. He was educated at Eton and at St John's College, Oxford. Leaving the university without taking a degree, he took up residence at Lincolns Inn in 1737. Four years later he married, and went to live at his country seat of Whitminster, Gloucestershire. In 1751 he removed to Twickenham, where he enjoyed the society of many notable persons. Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of news-monger. His chief work is the Scribleriad (1751), a mock epic poem, the hero of which is the Martinus Scriblerus of Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic, in which he avows Cervantes as his master. The satire shows considerable learning, and was eagerly read by literary people; but it never became…

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
