About This Item

London and Toronto: Jonathan Cape, 1944 An interesting copy of the 2nd impression of The Picts and the Martyrs in good wrapper. The book was produced to War Economy Standards and the wrapper is double-printed - Cape re-used a wrapper from Duff Cooper's book on world war II which was published in 1939. In addition this copy was given as a prize by the Hallett War School, Naini Tal, India in November 1944. The school was for children of army personnel serving in India. The wrapper is in good condition overall - being complete without price-clipping. The corners are clipped but that was clearly by the publisher. The wrapper has a price of 8s 6d net on the front flap. It has some edge nibbling with a little loss at the top and bottom of the spine and has a little repair with acid-free archive tape. There is a little browning to the spine and top edge and a little browning and creasing to the back. It is in a removable protective wrap. The green cloth binding is in good to very good condition. There is a little pulling to the spine and a few lighter spots to the front board. The corners are bumped. Internally the decorative endpapers are present with a bookplate of the Hallett War School to the front pastedown. Contents with black and white frontispiece and 19 further black and white full page illustrations. Numerous illustrations in the text. The paper is thin because of the war economy standards and is light toned, but the contents are in very good condition with occasional light rumpling at the bottom margin edge.

Synopsis

Arthur Ransome was born in 1884. He was in Russia in 1917 and witnessed the Revolution, which he reported for the Manchester Guardian. After escaping to Scandinavia, he settled in the Lake District of England with his Russian wife where, in 1929, he wrote Swallows and Amazon s. Thus began a writing career that has produced some of the best children’s literature of all time.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
