About This Item

Rotterdam, Reinier Leers, 1694. Junius juxtaposes all the passages known to ancient authors concerning painting to reconstruct, without concern for chronology, the history of this art and he develops a pictorial theory which takes into account the psychological (Book I) and pedagogical (Book II) factors of artistic creation, the third book studying the 'parts of painting' in a rhetorical and poetic perspective". (C. Nativel). All the authors of treatises on art in the 17th century, such as Fréart de Chambray, Roger de Piles, Félibien, have studied this second edition and have borrowed from it on numerous occasions. It is the most complete edition, very different of the first, with a second unpublished part, an alphabetical catalogue of the artists - painters, sculptors, architects, engineers - of Greek and Latin Antiquity, with what the ancient texts tell us about their works. The first edition of 1637, also posthumous, was a small quarto of 318 pages. "The modest 1637 volume has become an elegant work." Junius or François Du Jon (Bourges, 1545-Leyden, 1602), philologist and professor of reformed theology, disciple of Calvin and Theodore de Bèze, left a large number of works, all of great erudition. The edition is illustrated with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece and a portrait of the author. The second part, the Catalogus, has its own title page. This edition was prepared by Johann Georg Graevius, based on the manuscript donated by Junius family. Junius had not been able to find a publisher willing to take on such an expensive volume. "An early work by a member or the circle of Rubens. According to Schlosser (A49) it is even today a rich source of antiquarian erudition." Artntzen H64. Small split at top and bottom of the the first hinge, a small cut-out at the corner of a guard. Very nice copy in contemporary Dutch vellum. - -.
