About This Item

London: Edward Moxon, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Campbell, Thomas. THE PILGRIM OF GLENCOE, AND OTHER POEMS. Inscribed. London: Edward Moxon, 1842. First Edition. 8vo., 119pp., with two engravings. Half calf over contemporary marbled boards bound by Seton & Mackenzie, five raised bands, modern gilt-stamped title piece. A very good example. Presentation copy inscribed on the 3rd free endpaper: "To Rob't. Carruthers Esqr. / from / The Author - / London 3rd March / 1842". Neat ownership name of Mary M. Carruthers 1894 on the front pastedown. Contains the biting poem entitled: "To the United States Of North America: ."Our standard's constellation types / White freedom by its stars; / But what's the meaning of the stripes? / They mean your negroes' scars." An uncommon first edition. Thomas Campbell, [1777 - 1844], Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing specially with human affairs. He was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became the University of London. In 1799, he wrote 'The Pleasures of Hope' a traditional 18th century survey in heroic couplets. He also produced several stirring patriotic war songs- Ye Mariners of England, The Soldier's Dream, Hohenlinden and in 1801, The Battle of Mad and Strange Turkish Princes. Campbell was one of the most popular poets of the early 19th century. He was buried in Westminster Cathedral in Poet's Corner.
