Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy bound in full leather, probably the original publisher's leather binding, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; withdrawn from the Harvard College library (and then the previous owner, David Wheatland's library), but with neither highlighting nor underlining nor hardly any signs of ex-library status beyond a single ink-stamp Light flaking of leather covers, slight chipping of leather on spine at burgundy label, some moderate wear along edges, light waffling to text, foxing to endpapers especially, else a remarkably sturdy and attractive volume indeed. The author was once the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. There is a lovely black-and-white illustration of him at frontis, after an engraving prepared by Hopkins & Earle of Philadelphia. Copperplate engravings galore. Robert Patterson, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, edited the entirety of this treatise upon natural and physical sciences, from physics to astronomy, biology to chemistry, and provides explanatory and supplementary notes.
