Paris: Adrien Le Clere, 1836. Hardcover. Very Good -. Imprint also contains: Laval: P.A. Genesley-Portiers. Deuxieme Edition. 3 volumes: 456, 459, 396 p.; 18 cm. Contemporary full mottled calf; red leather spine labels with gilt-tooled title and black leather spine labels with gilt-tooled volume number. Gilt-tooled decoration on remainder of spines. Gilt-tooled board edges. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Green ribbon bookmark in each volume. List of other works by the same author on hald title verso, vol. 1. Ex-library: "Bibliotheca Mount St. Alphonsus, Esopus, N.Y." stamped on verso of half title or title page in each volume (Mount St. Alphonsus closed in Jan. 2013). Each volume also has date of acquisition and number stamped on front free endpaper verso or half title verso. The author, Ferdinand Ritter von Géramb (1772-1848), or Marie Joseph Géramb, was a fascinating figure. He began as an Austrian soldier of fortune, spent three years in a French prison, and then entered a Trappist monastery, becoming Procurator General of the Reformed Cistercians. He was also a successful writer. In Very Good- Condition: scraping at tail of spines; vol. 2 lacking small amount of leather on spine, primarily along edge of red label; vol. 3 lacking leather at tail; lower edge of vol. 1 front board bent; back fixed endpaper scraped on each volume; occasional light foxing along page edges; otherwise, pages are clean and bright.
