Philadelphia: Joseph Healy, 1838. First Edition. Small Octavo. Most likely a presentation copy to Henry B. Stanton as it is signed and dated 1838 by the author on the dedication page, which was dedicated to Stanton. Stanton and Whittier were great friends working for the same cause, abolishment of slavery and the restriction of interstate trade. "Whittier struck the key note of his whole career as a reformer when he quoted upon his title page, of this first authorized collection of his anti-slavery poems the words of S.T. Coleridge. "There is a time to keep silence........" The publisher, Joseph Healy was the financial agent of the Anti-Slavery Society of Pennsylvania. Bound in full brown leather, boards trimmed with a single gilt decorative role, raised bands, lettering gilt, all edges marbled with matching endpapers. Upper board may have been repaired or re-enforced at some early date, occasional spots of foxing. A very good copy of one of Whittier's most controversial books of poetry. [BAL21710].
