According to the "Avertisement" at the end, the manuscript was unfinished due to the ill-health of the anonymous author, an "homme de qualite et scavant." Pierre Marteau is a fictitious publishing house, never located in Cologne or anywhere else, providing a name under which French, German, and Dutch printers could disseminate controversial or pornographic books from 1660 to the late 18th century. A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
