About This Item
Salem, NY: printed by John M. Looker, for the author, 1805. 1st edition - Poems on mostly politics of the time & local issues, as well as a sympathetc poem of a dying Negro on a slave ship - Foster's long plight of the Negro poem " Extract of an Address Presented to the readers of the Waterford Gazette, January 1, 1804. " has been reprinted in James G. Basker's " Amazing Grace - An Anthology of Poems about Slavery 1660 - 1810 " - Yale University Press - 2002 - it is a contribution to what is now being referred to as the Afrocentric Poetics of the Enlightenment - scarce imprint & a rare book - original binding, old calf, worn, old names & dates on prelims, paper foxed and browned at edges and occassionally throughout - lacks 2 leaves later in the book, just before the appendix, and appear never to have been bound in [ still no excuse ] - but still a good representative copy of the period.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
