The first edition.'Poor Jack' follows the young, Thomas Saunders, a sailor's son who is a neglected sea urchin, as he finds himself struggling to survive in London in the early nineteenth century.Illustrated with thirty-six plates and in-text engravings. Collated, complete.Written by Frederick Marryat, a Royal Navy officer.Illustrated by Clarkson Stanfield. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the boards, and light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the extremities. Spine is lightly faded. A small amount of loss of paper to the rear joint. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
