About This Item

London; Nd( but 1823): W. Simkin and R. Marshall. First Edition. Small Octavo. In three volumes: Each volume has a different vignette title page. Vol. I: 332, Vol. II: 316 and Vol. III: 349pp. A very scarce set on the German ghost, fairy tales and ghost stories influenced many of England's gothic writers. The Bottle Imp story was clearly used by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Among its unnamed translators are Thomas De Quincy, Robert Browning, and several others. Copies are found only in the British Museum, the Bodleian, the Boston Public, and the Library of Congress. The date had been excised(?) but is 1823. Bound in 3/4 green polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, double brown morocco spine labels gilt, other compartments gilt decorated, all edges marbled with matching endpapers, marbled boards rubbed, spine rubbed or nicked, with a few chips to heads. A very good set.
