About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company,, 1882. A smartly bound copy First US edition, second state. The Prince and the Pauper, set in 1537, was the first of Clemens's historical novels and was inspired by Charlotte Yonge's Little Duke (1854), which Clemens found in his sister-in-law's library at Quarry Farm. The London and Montreal editions of this work "were issued some days prior to the Boston edition" (BAL). The text in this state is corrected in three places: page 124, line 1, "estate" corrected to "state"; page 263, line 9 up from bottom, "do not" corrected to "do"; and page 362, line 3 up from bottom "reigned" corrected to "reined". Quarto (214 x 166 mm). Contemporary tan half calf, titles to blue and red morocco labels to spine, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, marbled paper sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Facsimile holograph and wood-engraved frontispiece, Franklin Press imprint on verso of title page, numerous text illustrations, chapter vignettes. Wear to board edges, covers rubbed, marks and light scuffs to leather, fore edges of first few leaves brittle with a couple of chips, crease to front free endpaper, a very good copy. BAL 3402.

The book represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction.
