About This Item

London: H.K. Lewis, 1883. 1st Edition . Good Plus. 5.25 x 8.25 inches (13.5 x 21 cm). First printing, dated November 1883. Original wraps with browning and chipping to edges, slight loss to foot of spine, stain to upper corner of rear cover, small archival tape repair to reverse of front cover. A few pages are protruding from the page block, but binding is completely sound with all pages fully attached. A few spots of foxing to outside page edge. Garrison-Morton 4348: 'Contributions to surgery and medicine. 8 pts Thomas was the veritable founder of modern orthopedics in the British Isles. The conservative methods introduced by him were developed by Sir Robert Jones. Thomas is remembered eponymically by the Thomas Splint.' Second part of Thomas's important 'Contributions to Science and Medicine' series, issued in parts between 1883 and 1890 (although not in numerical order). All of the parts were issued in this paperback format and the fragile nature of the books has resulted in very few survivors, especially in the original wraps. WorldCat lists 7 copies of part II (4 in the UK, 2 in the US and 1 in Switzerland.) This copy comes from the private library of Dr. John Kirkup, orthopaedic surgeon and renowned surgical historian. We also have parts V, VI, VII and VIII from the same collection. Rare. Overall condition is Good Plus. International postage will be less than the stated rate. Actual costs are Europe £11.20; USA £18.10; Oceania £18.05; Rest of World £15.85. A postage refund will be made after the order has been placed. Size: 5.25 x 8.25 inches (13.5 x 21 cm). Paperback. Printed pages: 151
