FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST TECHNICAL PAPER ON COMPUTER CHESS" (Christies, Origins of Cyberspace Auction, 2005). Claude Shannon's seminal 1950 paper is considered "the foundation of computer chess" (Reilly, Milestones in Computer Science and Information Technology, 55). "The framework he introduced has guided most of the subsequent analysis of the problem" (Newell, Shaw, & Simon, 44). "Since the mid-1940s, scientists had aimed to create a thinking machine, an apparatus that could compete with or even surpass the human brain in logical operations, pattern recognition, problem solving and even language. Chess was found to be a useful testing ground because of its combination of simple rules and mind-bending complexity... Shannon was fascinated by chess' potential in the pursuit of what he called 'mechanized thinking.' But he became convinced that computer chess and other AI pursuits should not be modeled on human thought... Computers, at least as they were understood then, could calculate very quickly, following programmed instructions" (Shenk, 201, 211). Shannon believed that chess would be the ideal proving ground for this new type of intelligence. Believing that theoretically, "the game could be fully converted into one long mathematical formula," Shannon's paper was "concerned with the problem of constructing a computing routine or 'program' for a modern general purpose computer which will enable it to play chess" (Shannon; Shenk). It "was the first publication to describe how a position might be evaluated and how a game tree might be searched. The paper was the text of a lecture given by Shannon to the Institute of Radio Engineers on 9 March 1949) (Cooper & Leeuwen, Alan Turing, 644). This paper also includes an aside that came to be known as 'the Shannon number," the number of possible chess games that can be played. That number, also known as "the game tree complexity of chess," is based on Shannon's calculation on a logical approximation that each game has an average of 40 moves and each move a player chooses between 30 possible moves. That makes a total of 10120 possible games. This number is known as the number of Shannon. Shannon, an electrical engineer, was also known as "the father of information theory." [Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana: 400] Third French edition.Gioachino Greco, also known as Il Calabrese, was born around 1600 in Celico, which near Cosenza in Calabria. Calabria had already produced such players as Leonardo di Bono and Michele di Mauro. From his writing it's apparent the he wasn't educated and likely came from a lower class family. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. This paper was first presented at the National IRE Convention, March 9, 1949, in New York. "The Philosophical Magazine," Ser. 7, Vol 41, March 1950 (pp. 256-275) first published this paper. Offered here as a reproduced copy of the original offprint, from Shannon's files. Levy, in his "Computer Chess Compendium," states, "This chapter serves as a historical introduction to the remainder of the volume. The five examined offprints [as here] have been oddly but consistently constructed. The first leaf (wrapper title) is tipped onto a gathering formed by pages 257-272 (signed 'U'). Pages 273-276 (276 is blank) are formed by folding a single sheet once and tipping that unsigned gathering to the verso of the ‘U' gathering. This example with hard creases on pp 271-274, soft creasing to upper right corner, and light soiling to (mostly) the upper third of the front wrapper. A remarkable survival of a fragile item. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. On occasion of the 60th birthday of Bernhard Kagan, the "Freie Schachvereinigung Berlin" arranged a small tournament with 10 participants. The field was noticeably strengthened by the participation of Efim Bogoljubov, who had returned to Germany after a two years stay in Russia, and also Rudolf Spielmann. The favorite Bogoljubov won in the end, despite a bad start with a loss to Ernst Gruenfeld in round 2. Spielmann disappointed a little. The tournament was sponsored by Viktor Tietz. First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.[1] The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.



Corners creased, spine and edges sunned, pages still unread else a vary good copy.

Aron Nimzowitsch captured first prize, playing at that time, the hyper-modern openings. He did not lose a game with a score of 8. Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. With the Nimzowitsch win, this gave the hyper-modern school more respect.Condition:Spine ends and corners chipped, edges and spine sunned else a good copy, internally very good.
