About This Item

Evans Brothers Limited, London, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. 380 g.; VI, 7-190 pages, list of illustrations, and bibliography. The text is illustrated with three reproductions of contemporary illustrations of the men described. Green coloured boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Rubbing and discolouration to the backstrip edges and to the book corners. Browning and foxing to the text block edges and a few marks to the book panels. Browning and light foxing to the endpapers and to the internal text. The List of Illustrations has placed the incorrect page for the placement of the illustrations within the text; ie., the portrait of Praise-God Barebone is listed as facing page 7, where in actual fact it is placed between pages 16 and 17. The other two illustrations are likewise incorrectly numbered, but are present within the text. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing the three men portraits on the front panel with a dark red background and white and black titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the backstrip edges. Heavy rubbing to the creases of the dustwrapper and lighter rubbing to the panels. On either side of both the top and bottom backstrip edges tears, measuring between 0.25 " -- 0 .5 ". Sunning of the backstrip. Browning and foxing to the verso of the dustwrapper. A portrait of three very different men from the 17th century England. Praise-God Barebone -- portrait of London before the great Fire and of independent merchants of the city of London. The second portrait is of the second Earl of Rochester -- John Wilmot, who died at 32, but not before being both an asset and a disgrace of the Royal Court of Charles II. The third port is of the country's Squire -- Robert Walpole, father of the English Prime Minister, and of his wife, the mother of 19 children. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
