L. C. on the front pastedown. ... ... ... The periodicals offers essays and comment on politics and literature and reviews recently published books. As sometimes happens this volume is bound with only the Contents list for number XLIV. This volume contains reviews of Hazlitt's " Sketches of Public Characters"; a 40pp review of Hill's "Essays on the Institutions, Government and Manners of the State of Ancient Greece" focussing particularly on the state of female society; 44pp on a number of titles on the Cape of Good Hope; 30pp on Bowdichi's "Mission from Cape Coast Castle to Ashantee"; 32pp on several books dealinig with magia and mythology of the Middle Ages; 15pp on Humboldt's "Sur l'Elevation des Montagnes de l'Inde"; 45pp on Burckhardt's "Travels in Nubia". Each number ends with a list of new publications and there's also an index to the volume.
