About This Item
Furuland, Sweden: Alhambra del Norte. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 9187680505 . Front cover rub, otherwise light wear. Solid trade paperback. ; Spanish language. "The author indicates in a foreword that the work represents an image he developed in dealing with many victims of torture while working as a translator for the Swedish Immigration Service. The "beloved traitor" of the title is a professor in an unnamed Latin American country that bears the unmistakable marks of the River Plate region during the period of the desaparecidos. The professor is fundamentally apolitical but is lured by his activist daughter into an act that leads quickly to his imprisonment and brutal torture. Through the intervention of a close friend who, as an influential businessman, has some clout with the brutish military authorities, he is declared to have died of a heart attack and allowed to escape to Sweden. The remainder of the text has to do with the professor's attempt to rebuild his life in Scandinavia." - William L Siemens book review, World Literature Today, Vol. 68, Iss. 4, (Autumn 1994): 792-793. Novel by one of the most outstanding Cuban exile writers, now living in Sweden. ; 211 pages .
