NY: United States Book Co - John Lovell Book. Illus. by 2 Folding Maps. Profuse Illustrations. Very Good. Decorative Cloth. First U.S.. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hess Coger 3927. A Disaster to the supply column for Stanley, in African exploration. By the naturalist of the expedition. Two folding maps professionally repaired. Pages xxxii, 455 so a thick, heavy book usually found with poor hinges because of the weight. This copy is clean and tight inside with no foxing or browning. The decorative lime cloth has a hunter's head in gilt silver shirt and pith helmet that are slightly rubbed, under brown palm fronds on the front cover. There is slight edgewear. This is a very good read on Stanley's involvement with suppression of the slave trade, and exploration. The author was scion of the Irish whiskey distiller, and he died of a jungle disease on the expedition. This is his account, edited by his wife from his diary and papers..

Description:
London: John Murray, 1858. Book. Illus. by Folding Map, 25 Woodcuts Including Folding Frontispiece. Very Good. Decorative Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Continuation of the title, "Including a Journey to the Capital with Notices of the Natural History of the Country and of the Present Civilisation of the People". Pages xvii, 470. Original gilt figures and palm tree on the front cover, on dark blue cloth. The spine is unfaded, but a bit of edgewear. Binding protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Inside, some foxing to the first and last few leaves. Ellis was sent to Madagascar three times to investigate whether Christians were being maltreated. That investigation was not productive, as he was denied access to the capital, but it was the first widely read account of the island, and a thorough description of the society, customs, religion and natural history..

London: Chapman and Hall, 1892. Book. Illus. by Illustrations and Map. Very Good. Hardcover. Stated 2nd Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Very good original brown cloth with an oriental red design across the front. Some soiled and edgewear, with a dull gilt title on the spine. Inside, remarkably this copy has never been read. Some pages were uncut at the top or foreedge, and I have just cut them all. Very clean and tight, no foxing or stains. No prior owner marks. Pages (x including the half title), 365. Most entrepid travellers of this age profess to be enthralled or romantic in prose about their courage and what they have done. Not Mr. de Windt. Much on Siberia and Mongolia. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. As with the first edition, only 750 copies were produced for this second edition. Thus, rather scarce..

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
