San Francisco: North Point Press, 1986. First Edition. SIGNED by J.D. McClatchy, the editor, on the title page. A collection of poet James Merrill's prose pieces -- interviews, essays, stories, and reviews -- over a period of 40 years. 8vo., xvi, 202 pages. Near Fine, with an ink mark on page x, in a Near Fine dust jacket that has light age toning to the flap edges.
Some of the material in this book appears for the first time. Most of it, though, has long been out of print or unavailable. There's something for everyone: essays about other poets, notably Dante, Wallace Stevens, and Elizabeth Bishop, travel notes from the Far East, an essay on the paintings of Corot; a talk to the first female graduating class from Amherst, reminiscences about his friends; and three short stories.
