About This Item

New York: Park Lane, 1989. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. This large volume does justice not only to the 124 color and 116 b & w reproductions but to the multitude of family, friends, artists, critics, and historians who have written, not always kindly, about Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), and whose comments, as well as Renoir's own letters and writings have all been represented here. First Park Lane Edition, first printing (with complete letter line). About 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches, 386 pages including index. Bound in blue cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Contents include a bibliographical index, chronology, over 130 letters, essays, reviews, articles written over 120 years as well as the art works, many in full-page, full-color plates. Dustjacket's front panel shows a detail from "By The Sea Shore (1883), which overlaps spine and part of dj's back panel. Boards and binding clean and tight with some wear along bottom edges, not uncommon in large books. Text shows brief inscription to previous owner on back of half-title page, o/w text is clean, complete and unumarked. No tears, no bumping or creasing. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Price-clipped dustjacket shows only slight touch of edge and surface wear. By the end of his life, Renoir was the Impressionist most popular with the French people if not with the critics. This is the book for a comprehensive look at his work and his life. [Due to its size and weight, this book will require considerable extra postage for priority/express and/or orders from outside the U.S.]
