About This Item

Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1878. Pamphlet. 16p., no illustrations or facsimiles, softbound first edition, a thread-tied pamphlet in 9x6 inch pale grey plain printed wraps. The thread is original and in fine shape. Covers are slightly edgeworn with occasional flecks of soil, nothing nasty, a very good copy: generally sound, otherwise clean and free of any markings. Powell's famous survey trip through the Grand Canyon (&c &c) took place in the mid-1860s. His remarks on the Native American populations show an enlightened ethnological background and firsthand experience. Irrigation and/or drainage of vast areas are a main emphasis.
