Dark red covers with black and gilt lettering and simple decoration are lightly rubbed at the edges, ex-library copy with usual pasted labels, stamps and ticket wallet. Paper is split over webbing at internal hinges with some looseness in the front joint but covers are firmly attached, internal binding is sound, pages are clean but a little darkened. London : Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1808 A fair to good copy of the second revised edition of Dr Barry's comprehensive account of the Orkney Islands in contemporary full leather binding. With folding map and 11 full page plates. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands, decorative gilt compartments and title label to spine, with titles and gilt border to front board. It is clean, but with wear to corners (with leather loss), and the top and bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the front spine joint. The endpapers are marbled, with the armorial bookplate of F Monteith Ogilvie to the front pastedown, and the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian book collection to the fep. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Co, 1924. First American Edition. Octavo. This set, one volume extended into two volumes, was expertly extra illustrated by the previous owner adding engravings and photographs of those mentioned within the book, including Mark Twain along with beautiful views of the areas mentioned. Photogravure frontispiece, and 18 photographic plates each with two images, extra-illustrated with 144 plates some mounted, some inlaid including 18 hand-colored and 3 in monochrome, one original photograph of Professor John Tyndale, a prominent 19th century physicist, with his clipped signature and another plate of actress Mary Robinson, who was the mistress of George IV when he was Prince of Wales, with her clipped signature from a letter. Both volumes finely bound in 3/4 green morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, raised bands ruled in gilt, lettering and top edges gilt, some fading to spines otherwise near fine.

Octavo (11x17cm) speckled brown leather on 4 raised bands with orange gilt spine title label (neat small repair to head of spine, tips rubbed) All edges marbled but darkened, [14]pp (titlepage, dedication & contents) + 272pp + errata leaf tipped in, collated complete except lacks blank leaf A8. Side notes and good margins, monogram engraved bookplate by W.G.R., pages crisp and clean throughout. *Supports the succession to Charles II of his brother James Duke of York, in spite of (p 236) "the moral impossibility of introducing the Romish Religion, tho the Prince were of that Persuasion". Very rare (Wing W2921, ESTC R27078).

First edition; octavo; [4],vii,[1],252pp, with full complement of 16 plates, and list of subscribers on p.[iv]-vii. Recent period-style half calf over marbled boards with five raised spine bands between glt single fillets and gilt-lettered red morocco title label in second compartment, plate of King Edgar's Tower laid down on matching paper preserving decent margins around printed image,very occasional unobtrusive spots and stains, otherwise a very clean complete copy in attractive period binding of this early Worcester imprint and first dedicated account of the city as it stood in the eighteenth century. Cambridge: R. Walker & T. James, 1745. Two Volumes, first thus. This is the two volume re-issue of this work by Walker, in 1745. It was longer than the earlier edition (extending to 1234 pages rather than 1109), but it was not issued with the engravings. This copy conforms to ESTC T154531 with pages up to Y4 the same as the earlier issue, those after differing. In this copy, Y4 is not a cancel. Half contemporary leather bindings, with marbled boards (now significantly faded) gilt volume number but no titles to each spine. Leather is a little cracked, but binding is holding well. Vol. 1 has a modern cutting with a portrait of Cromwell pasted to the inside front board. Title page is a little darkened. Rest of the work is in good clean condition, with a few pages a little dirty. To volume II, the rear paste down is covered in pencil page references. The last text page has a repaired tear, with a corner of loss (not affecting text.). (viii) 1-716, 721-1234. pp. 110 by 170mm (4¼ by 6¾ inches).

Thomas Tryon (1634-1703) , who had at various times in his life worked as a shepherd and a hatter, was greatly influenced by the writings of Behmen.
