We are told of their hard work at the gold mines, the joys and travails of mining life, and their sundry adventures. Bound in elaborate, pictorial black cloth, stamped in gilt and colors on both covers and on spine; inner rear hinge repaired, otherwise near fine condition. 7.75" x 4.75" This is Dan Volkmann's copy with his Golden Bear bookplate. This colorful pictorial map captures the lore of the Old West. The map features prominent pioneer trails such as the Oregon Trail, the Santa Fe Trail and the Pony Express route. Among the many notable events highlighted on the map are the battle of the Alamo, Custer's last stand, Pat Garrett's shooting of Billy the Kid and numerous Indian battles.
The map is framed by portraits of 26 prominent personalities Bat Masterson, Anne [sic] Oakley, Sitting Bull, Judge Roy Bean, Martha Canary ('Calamity Jane'), Doc Holliday, Geronimo and Davy Crockett.
Danny Arnold was a Canadian who toured England with a Wild West Show in the 1960s, taking advantage of the British fascination with as the American "Old West" at the time. Presumably the map was sold as a souvenir to those who attended the shows.

Pleasant Hill, MO: Little & Sprague No Date, circa 1869, what is now called the Hannibal Bridge saw construction begin in 1867 and finish in 1869. Titled "Kansas City Railroad and Carriage Bridge" under photo, "Little & Sprague, Pleasant Hill, MO" right margin, in fine print under left side of photo "Total Length 1,395 Feet" and :"PACAN & WINANS (illegible)" under right side of photo. Verso appears to have a map in faint pencil of the area of the bridge. Very Good, dark spot to margin left edge. . Cartes-de-Visite . Very Good. 2 1/2" x 4".

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1928. RARE -SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on end page following half-title page - " To an old and tried friend Dana Coman. Arthur Walden Sept. 1/30". In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic expedition, and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden, considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes, was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman (Dr Francis Dana Coman (1895-1952) ) was with Byrd’s first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd. Sacramento, California , 1855. Two manuscript letters in ink, both on ruled paper with folding creases, the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2", with single spaced writing both sides, approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10", folded in half to make 4 pp., approx. 300 words, with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County, Nevada post office, California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter", including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff", and that he is not home sick yet.
