About This Item
1879 1st ed Thomas Hardy Return of the Native Egdon Heath Witchcraft Clym & Vye
"The Return of the Native" was admired for its powerfully evoked setting of Egdon Heath, which was based on the somber countryside Thomas Hardy had known as a child. Egdon Heath, a fictional location created by Hardy, is known for widespread witchcraft and superstitions.
This is his 6th novel which was known for its sensationalism and controversial themes quickly becoming one of Hardy's most popular and highly regarded novels. The novel portrays the tragic marriage of Eustacia Vye and Clym Yeobright, the returning native, who is blind to his wife's needs by his naive zeal and moral fervor.

Synopsis
The Return of the Native is Thomas Hardy's sixth published novel. It first appeared in the serial Belgravia, a publication known for its sensationalism, and was presented in twelve monthly installments from January to December of 1878. Due to the novel's controversial themes, Hardy had some difficulty finding a publisher; reviews, however, though somewhat mixed, were generally positive. In the twentieth century, The Return of the Native became one of Hardy's most popular novels.
