About This Item

C. J. Musson and Associates, Toronto, 1985 first edition. 103 p. profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams, data sheets. The Royal Canadian Navy had been in existence for 20 years before acquiring the first fighting ship actually built to its order. These were the destroyers 'Saguenay' and 'Skeena' who, with four other 'River class' units made up the tiny offensive force with which the RCN went to war in 1939. Later augmented by the transfer of eight more near-sisters from the Royal Navy, these formed the nucleus of what was to become the third largest Allied navy, and made a valuable contribution to the successful outcome of the Battle of the Atlantic.
