Only volume defects are the previous owner's name is on the top outside corner of the front free end paper and several small speck-like spots are on the top of the text block. Bright, glossy DJ is without tears, chips, or creases. The front DJ has a very small spot of label residue. This volume appears unused. From the back DJ, "Inevitably the climax of this book...is the seige of Khartoum in 1884, and here all the general's ambivalences are displayed as it were in silouette - as though one can actually see the outline of his figure on the palace roof, chainsmoking and peering through his telescope towards Omdurman. Gordon's defense of Khartoum was by any standards a remarkable performance..."
