London and New York: Longmans, Green, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. First edition (stated). Large octavo in dark green cloth stamped in gilt. Illustrated endpapers. xvi+ 274 pp. with index. Numerous monotone photographic plates and reproductions. A tight, fine example, tasteful vintage bookplate front pastedown. No jacket. The first comprehensive hisotry of the Oregon Trail, expanding signifiicanly on Parkman's 1848 work and the 1898 Inman and Cody book. Ghent begins the story with the "pathmakers" , Mainlythe trappers and fur traders, the missionaries who followed, the first caravans of the late 1830s and early 40s, the Great Migration, the Gold Rush, te stage coach era and finally the decline of the trail.
