About This Item

London: John & Paul Knapton. First Edition . Hardcover. Fair. First English Editions, by an unknown translator; the originals were in French. Volumes 6 and 7 by Rollin, published in 1742; Volume 10 by Crevier, published in 1745. Fair overall, though v10 is poor. The paper and printing was excellent, though some maps are misfolded; foxing to pastedowns of v6 and 7, light foxing to interior of v7. Modern bookplate to each volume on front pastedown. Full-leather bindings quite damaged, the spines are heavily chipped, worn and cracked with the title-pieces chipped off except for a portion of v7; leather rubbed and worn, corners worn to boards; broken throughout due to spine cracks. Volume 6 came apart completely and was repaired with a new front hinge, new rear joint and hinge, and partially replaced spine (Japanese paper was used for half of spine and front joint), the book is still quite fragile; blindstamp on ffep and a name stamped twice on the blank page following the ffep. Volume 7 has repaired front joint and hinge; rear board is barely attached, rear hinge broken; blindstamp on ffep. Volume 10 has detached front and rear boards; a 7.25in x 2.5in rectangle of the original leather on rear board cut out, prev. owner replaced leather with four smaller leather pieces glued into rectangle; name stamp on ffep; water stain to bottom edge, affects bottom edges of pages from middle of book to the end. Each has a handsome engraved frontis: small stain in corner (off-picture) of v6; foxing to frontispiece of v10. v6 has a hand-colored folding map of Greece, which has been misfolded and torn, but still looks good. v7 has a folding map of Cisalpine Gaul, hand-outlined in yellow; also misfolded, but not torn. No map in v10 which covers events up to the Catiline conspiracy and the War with the Pirates (about 69 BC). We believe there were twelve volumes in all.
