This book recounts the history of the Royal African Company and relates it to a number of wider themes: the evolution of credit and joint-stock organization in England, the broadening of British commericial interests in the seventeenth century, the rivalry of European nations for the trade of Africa, and the development of the English West Indian colonies. It also compares the merits of a large-scale monopolistic corporations with the competitive enterprise of small traders.
